How can I get solder off my gold coin?
I have a gold coin that was soldered to a pin and still has some solder on it.
It’s .900 fine gold and .100 copper
I don’t wanna buy a soldering iron…is there any way I can do it at home? Like put it in my oven or something? What temperature will it not melt the gold but melt the solder?
Both gold and copper have melting points much higher than your kitchen stove will go. Not sure what kind of solder they would use. Easiest method is to go to the hardware store and buy a small spool of (de)soldering braid. it looks like braided copper wire. Put the coin, solder side up, in an oven safe glass casserole. (If you are a kid, ask your mom first). Put it in the oven and turn the oven up to 500°F, let it sit for an hour. Using oven mitts or potholders, take the glass casserole out of the oven and place it on top of the stove. Unreel some of the desoldering braid, and being careful not to touch the casserole, brush the end of the braid over the solder. The braid should soak it right up. Let the whole mess cool before you touch it or try to pick up the coin.
